Provides supervision and assists in administrative duties and quality management of the Occupational Therapy/Rehabilitation Program. Provides and coordinates delivery of the Occupational Therapy/Rehabilitation Program for Inpatient/Forensic Psychiatric Services.
A. Assist in writing policies and procedures in compliance with Department standards and goals, JCAHO, DMH, DPH requirements and professional standards and helps monitor the quality of services provided by the Occupational Therapy Department.
B. Assist in providing quality management for the O.T. Department and assist in ensuring effective and quality group program/rehabilitation services on AIPU.
C. Supervises Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, C.O.T.A., and Occupational Therapy Assistant, O.T.A. in work assignments on regular basis.
D. Supervises occupational therapy assistants in their work assignments as needed.
E. Assists in the ongoing development and implementation of the therapeutic Milieu. Contributes to the review and planning of the Milieu program based on assessed needs and trends. Provides group supervision for staff leading therapeutic groups.
F. Provides teaching training and supervision for Occupational Therapy Students and completes evaluation of psychiatric rotation for affiliated colleges and universities.
G. Assume role of acting Occupational Therapy Director as needed.
H. Assists the Director of Occupational Therapy in educational and staff development activities.
I. Assists in recruitment and interviewing of candidates for employment in the O.T. Department and makes recommendations concerning hiring, promotion, etc. of O.T. Department staff.
J. Prepares reports, minutes, and memos as needed for P.I.T.S, group coordinators meeting, task forces, and other committees.
K. Assists in maintaining billing procedure.
L. Conducts functional and cognitive evaluations and OT screening assessments to determine a patient’s need for therapy. Establishes goals and interventions as appropriate for the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
M. Selects therapeutic activities designed to achieve treatment plan objectives. Activities include manual arts and crafts, homemaking skills, activities of daily living, psychoeducational efforts, stress management and communication skills.
N. Provides individual and group therapy and therapeutic activities. Conducts all assigned therapeutic groups.
O. Documents observations and progress in the patient’s medical record utilizing the DAP format.
P. Coordinates occupational therapy treatment activities with other disciplines through treatment team meetings and rounds in order to ensure effectiveness of a patient’s treatment plan.
Q. Prepares reports on such matters as treatment plans, patient progress and evaluation results to provide information concerning the content and effectiveness of occupational therapy treatment.
R. Provides consultation to rehabilitation service staff regarding problems or difficulties encountered in the treatment of patients.
S. Educates patients and families to recognize patients potential and ability to recover and be discharged.
T. Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies by monitoring supply levels and condition, contributes to ordering supplies, and recommending the repair or purchase of equipment to ensure the availability of required resources.
U. Maintains commitment to professional growth and competency through attending seminars, workshops and conferences. Keeps current with changes in the Department of Mental Health, Metro Boston Mental Health Center and the Department by participating in Staff Meeting, and other designated meetings, reading and being aware of new Policies and Procedures.

As part of the Telecare community, Telecare Riverside County Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) and Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). The PHF is a 16-bed facility with an intensive treatment program licensed by the California Department of Mental Health as an acute inpatient program, and designated by RCDMH as a 5150 facility providing involuntary and voluntary psychiatric care. The CSU provides less than 24 hour care to consumers of all ages on a voluntary and involuntary basis. This service either stabilizes consumers sufficiently to return them to the community; or admits them to an appropriate psychiatric inpatient facility
The Riverside Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) will be a 16 bed adult intense treatment program licensed by the California Department of Mental Health as an acute inpatient program, and designated by RCDMH as a 5150 facility providing involuntary psychiatric care.
Rehabilitation services mean those activities provided by occupational therapists, physical therapists or recreation therapists under the general direction of the clinical director to restore, establish and maintain optimum levels of social, vocational and physical functioning and to minimize residual disabilities of patients.
The Director of Rehabilitation Services will provide guidance, training, supervision and direction to designated members of the facility treatment staff
Rehabilitation services provided in a psychiatric health facility are to be designed to meet the needs of acute psychiatric inpatients. Because PHF stays are generally quite brief, rehabilitation services must be designed and delivered accordingly.
In accordance with established policies and procedures, the scope of these activities shall include at least the following:
• Social activities which involve group participation.
• Recreational activities, both indoor and outdoor.
• Exercises, where the appropriate level of physical activity in which a patient may engage shall be determined by a physician.
Registration recognized by the State of California as an occupational therapist. One (1) year of experience in a psychiatric setting providing services to a severely and persistently mentally ill clientele is required. A valid Class II California Drivers license and insurability may be required. Criminal justice clearance and education verification are required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in I.E.P.’s.
• Provide In-Service training as needed.
