Susan Horn, PhD, senior scientist at the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research in Salt Lake City, Utah, will be leading a half-day workshop on practice-based evidence research in rehabilitation. Practice-based evidence is a research approach that, based on significant input from clinicians, studies the effectiveness of health interventions through the context of routine care. That is, instead of designing an experimental trial where variables are carefully controlled (as in a randomized controlled trial), a multidisciplinary team of clinicians identifies key components of a discipline’s care, ensures that those components are incorporated into routine intervention/care, and studies patient outcomes as they occur in real-life clinical settings. Over the last 40 years, Dr. Horn has established an international reputation in severity-of-illness measurement and clinical practice improvement (CPI) outcomes. She has conducted large-scale CPI studies in pediatric asthma, congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers, diabetes, post-stroke rehabilitation, and many other conditions.
