Transitions for Adolescents and Young Adults on the Autism/Asperger’s Spectrum

Are you an adolescent or young adult on the Autism/Asperger’s Spectrum who is transitioning into adulthood, college or other continuing education, and/or independence?

Are you a parent, guardian, or practitioner that works with adolescents and young adults?

The occupational therapists at our Faculty Practice can help individuals and their families achieve goals for more independent living. With collaboration between occupational therapist and the person/family, we can address any functional lifestyle change, including:

  • Developing daily routines to improve self-regulation and promote health
  • Social skills (conversation, making friends, group skills, dating)
  • Communication skills (use of body language, tone, assertive communication)
  • Stress management strategies
  • Adaptation to college life
  • Accepting and coping with the diagnosis
  • Self-advocacy (diagnosis disclosure, work/school accommodations)
  • Creating adaptive sensory strategies in multiple environments
  • Independent living skills, transitioning to independent living
  • Transition strategies for different settings, environments, people, and life phases
  • Community integration (mobility, access, safety procedures)
  • Meeting educational and academic goals
  • Sensory diets
  • Developing work skills, career exploration
  • Child and family education, family-centered care
  • Assistive technology recommendations (communication aids)
  • Environmental modification and adaptation
  • Overall quality of life, engagement, and participation

The number of sessions will vary by person, depending on the needs of the family and young adult. With a physician referral, services can be billed through your insurance. The USC Occupational Therapy Faculty Practice is not a vendor of the Regional Center.
