Training in Rehabilitation Efficacy and Effectiveness Trials
USC’s Training in Rehabilitation Efficacy and Effectiveness Trials (TREET) T32 postdoctoral training program is funded by the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development through the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. The TREET program provides intensive, mentored, and individualized postdoctoral training in randomized controlled trial methodology for the evaluation of complex rehabilitation interventions. TREET is co-administered through the USC Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy.
Reflecting a strong interdisciplinary emphasis, faculty members from rehabilitation-related research programs at the University of Southern California oversee a coordinated training experience for highly qualified postdoctoral trainees that includes individualized mentorship plans, core coursework, participation in training seminars, immersion in externally funded projects and writing of grant proposals and research publications. TREET training is organized around five core themes:
- The identification of effective interventions for children (pediatric rehabilitation)
- Protective and risk factors in adult with disabilities
- Rehabilitation and reintegration of people with disabilities into the community (acute and community-based rehabilitation)
- Applications of innovative technology
Rehabilitation Research Career Development Program (K12)
The Rehabilitation Research Career Development Program will educate and train future rehabilitation scientists. Funded by the National Center Medical Rehabilitation Research (NICHD) and the National Institute Neurological Disorders and Stroke (K12 HD055929), the RRCD program is geared towards rehabilitation scholars who are occupational and physical therapists, and builds on the extensive rehabilitation research infrastructure of the University of Texas Medical Branch, the University of Florida, and the University of Southern California, along with a nationwide network of NCMRR Research Infrastructure Cores, VA Centers of Excellence, rehabilitation research institutes, and physical therapy and occupational therapy educational departments.
Physical therapy and occupational therapy scholars from across the nation will be recruited and trained to become future leaders and mentors in rehabilitation. Scholars will acquire extensive research experience, generate, analyze, present and publish research data, and become equipped to compete for independent external research funding. The program will take advantage of its extensive rehabilitation research network to negotiate faculty positions in research supportive academic environments.
Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI)
TL1 Pre-doctoral Training Program
The TL1 pre-doctoral training program supports the research career development of promising doctoral students at the University of Southern California who wish to add to their doctoral training an emphasis on clinical and/or translational research. Candidates should be enrolled in a PhD program relevant to biomedical research and have an interest in conducting clinical/translational research in their chosen field. For the purposes of this award, translational research is considered broadly, including but not limited to:
- Bench research directed at developing new therapeutic or diagnostic tools
- Human studies of disease mechanisms or diagnostic or therapeutic approaches, including clinical trials
- Research into health care delivery, health outcomes and health economics
- Research into health behaviors and community health
KL2 Post-doctoral Mentored Career Research Development Award
The three-year KL2 Mentored Career Development Program supports the research career development of promising individuals who have recently completed professional training and who are commencing basic, translational, and/or clinical research. KL2 Scholars must have a research or professional doctoral degree in a clinical discipline. Applicants should be junior faculty members or anticipate promotion to faculty status. Applicants must be seeking a career in clinical and/or translational research. PhD faculty in the health professions seeking a transition into a clinical research career also qualify for this program. Their departments are expected to support their development as researchers on completion of the program. Individuals will work with their mentors and ECDE advisors to choose appropriate graduate-level clinical research coursework to achieve core competencies in clinical and translational research. In the process of acquiring these competencies, scholars are encouraged to obtain a Master of Science in Clinical and Biomedical Investigations from the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
